makeup & macaroons

This past Saturday morning was like any other: woke up late. Got a cab to class at The Old Town School of Folk Music. Practiced with my partner Linda. Listened to everybody else in class sing. Guess what? We sound awesome. Got notes from our teacher Gwen. Linda and I talked about what to wear for the recital. Though the show has a definite theme (60’s pop), we don’t have to get kitted out in sixties garb. We were thinking cute, for sure, but not too cute. I see myself applying a lot of eyeliner for some reason.

After class, I stood on the corner of Wilson and Lincoln, chatting with my classmate Wendy. It was a beautiful day, so we enjoyed the sunshine before going our separate ways. I hit the library to pick up some books that were on hold for me, stopped at Walgreen’s to buy the Chocolate Jeans Heart for Elisa as a hostess present, had a late lunch (ham and cheese sandwich) at The Melrose. Yes, I remembered to check into Foursquare at every stop I made. I think I have a problem. I am a Foursquare addict.

Bixby: My Furry Valentine

So why did I need a hostess present for Elisa? Well, Elisa had invited some pals over to check out some Cover Girl makeup she got in the mail from BzzAgent. She also promised cupcakes and watching Lifetime. That’s all I needed to hear.

We had ShadowBlast double-sided eye shadow sticks to play with, the idea being that we’d make our eyes look all smoky. It didn’t quite work out that way, as the two shades tended to get mixed up and then cancel each other out. While the shades were pretty, they were quite sheer and difficult to layer to show more pigment.

When I think about it now, doesn’t ShadowBlast sound like a Cobra Command operative? Or the word for “fart from a ninja”?

Also there were ShineBlast lip glosses, which had names like “Ignite”, “Glimmer”, and “Gleam”. Were these glosses or fireworks? Maybe it’s because all of our lips had enough pigment but I couldn’t any hint of tint on my lips.

After we made ourselves into smokey-eyed hottiepantses, we watched “The Pregnancy Pact” (aka the greatest Lifetime television movie EVER) and ate this really delicious vegetarian chili Elisa made in her crockpot. There were French macaroons from Fritz Pastry and, of course, girl talk. Mainly about cats, movies, Valentine’s Day (the holiday, not the allegedly terrible movie that opened this weekend), and boys.

I pestered Alissa and Elisa about their V-Day plans. Elisa had no idea while Alissa figured she and Jon would go to a bar near their apartment for dinner. Very low-key so naturally I was a little disappointed. Isn’t Valentine’s Day supposed to be, like, Super Bowl Sunday for people in relationships? I told Elisa I thought she and her boy should go see Valentine’s Day then follow that up with dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. They could split a single slice of cheesecake, each taking a side and eating it from opposite ends until they met in the middle. Like the spaghetti-eating scene in Lady and The Tramp only instead of dogs it’s people and instead of spaghetti it’s cheesecake! I am a genius at this romance thing.

inventory: Chanel nail polish

I don’t know when it started, but I’ve become enamored of Chanel nail polish. Was it that Allure interview with Sheril Bailey where she recommended it? Dunno, but I went ahead and splurged on a bottle of the stuff and I was hooked. I have:

  • Black Satin
  • Blanc Ceramic
  • Blue Satin (just ordered from Nordstrom last night)
  • Jasmin
  • Lotus Rouge
  • Vamp
  • Vanity

I feel like I’m missing a bottle, but I’ll have to go home and check. And maybe put on a fresh coat of Jasmin.

this week in Asian: good makeup, bad names

Lola Cosmetics Geisha Glow Highlighting Powder: Don’t know if this is the doing of the manufacturer or Makeup.com, but did we really need this in the product description: “the Orient’s most prized natural elements including rice, cotton and green tea”? Are we still referring to Asia as “the Orient”? What would the late Edward Said have to say about this? And when I think of traditional geisha makeup, I think of the severe black brows, bright red lips, and snow white foundation — nothing especially glowy about that, but maybe I’m resorting to stereotype, too? [Makeup.com]

Lancôme Khôl Oriental Duo Eyeliner: Again, where do they get this copy? And I read: “Two liners in one, this ‘chop stick’ shaped khôl is meant to feel like a precious object, as it resembles a cigarette holder or a hair ornament.” This only reminds me of how annoyed (perhaps irrationally so) when I see ladies wearing chopsticks in their hair as “orientnamentation”. I still feel, though, that this shit will look hot on me, so I’m adding it to my wish list for my birthday. [Sephora.com]

what i bought today: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss, "Cherries in the Glow"

Not much to say about this gloss except that it’s awesome and it makes my lips look so pretty.

You can get your own at any drugstore that sells Revlon. I got mine at the Walgreen’s on Jackson and Wacker.

what i bought today

Instead of going to what I’m sure was a kick-ass 80’s party, I fell asleep on my bed Friday night and woke up too late to go. Mad at myself, I did the only thing a girl in my position could do: I did some on-line shopping and promptly went back to sleep.

My haul from Gloss.com:

  • Chanel Precision Eye Definer in “Black” — gorgeous pencil with a tiny sponge applicator that can be used to smudge, ever so fashionably.
  • Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in “Pink Goddess” — Got a sample of this and three other sades in the “Colour Surge Butter Shine” collection a few weeks ago. Applied this shade after lunch Friday afternoon whist digesting. Delicious, and thankfully I didn’t smell like butter afterwards.

Oh, and earlier in the day I bought tickets to see Hot Fuzz tomorrow (Saturday) night with Joe and Jacinda.

i feel pretty

I have storage issues. CDs, out of their cases, litter the floor and crowd into plastic bins or shoeboxes. Old magazines lounge in piles under the couch. Stationery and paper goods spill out of an Ikea cupboard meant for shoes. My makeup, my beloved Nars and Stila and Vincent Longo, live in a plastic toolbox and a plastic storage bin.

Well, no more! I will do what I can to save up the ducats to buy them a new home. Though I myself do not have the resources to purchase a home at the moment, and I do not believe I will be able to buy an overpriced apartment until I am well into my 50’s, there is no reason why my makeup (which is part of the reason I cannot buy real estate) should suffer. Behold this teen-tastic Beauty Station, an accurate name for such a useful piece of home décor.
