"Cedar Rapids" Q&A with Ed Helms and Miguel Arteta, hosted by Steve Prokopy

I went to a screening of Cedar Rapids, a new movie directed by Miguel Arteta and starring Ed Helms (the newest member of my secret boyfriend club). I am not a film critic, but I made some notes if you’re thinking about going to see this fine comedy.

  1. Cedar Rapids is a sweet, funny movie with a fair amount of raunchy dialogue, drinking, some drugs, and partial nudity. This is my definition of a good time.
  2. Though Ed Helms plays a sweet, naïve man in Cedar Rapids, this movie is not The Hangover, part 2.
  3. That being said, The Hangover: Part II opens Memorial Day weekend.
  4. Miguel Arteta has made a bunch of movies that I love, like Chuck & Buck and Youth In Revolt. He has also directed “The Office” (which is how he met Ed Helms) and “Freaks and Geeks” which further proves that Miguel is awesome.
  5. This movie is exceptionally well-cast, featuring the likes of John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isaiah Whitlock, Jr., Stephen Root, Kurtwood Smith, and Sigourney Weaver.
  6. Though the movie is called and set primarily in the city of Cedar Rapids, it was actually filmed in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Apparently there was some scandal on another Iowa production that forced CR to move.
  7. Ed Helms spends a lot of time in his underwear in this movie.
  8. I didn’t get a chance to ask any questions at the Q&A after the movie, but if I had, I probably would have asked Ed “Um, do you want to make out with me?” before running out of the theater to die of utter embarrassment.
  9. The conference in the movie reminded me of trade shows I’ve attended in the past, and how much fun I got to have with old co-workers. Hotel pools are awesome.
  10. Cedar Rapids opens in limited release this Friday, February 11.
