Last night’s AICN screening of Ponyo was packed! Nite and I were able to save seats for Alissa and Jon and their friends. The seven of us settled in for what was sure to be another epic animated adventure from Hayao Miyazaki. Ponyo was beautiful, funny, bittersweet, and then… it was upside down.
Say what? A technical issue, apparently, unless David Lynch took over directing duties for the second half of the movie where everyone speaks and does stuff backwards and are upside down? Yeah, I didn’t think so, either. Or maybe it was some sort of cartoon karmic punishment for me eating sushi at Oysy right before the movie?
In any case, the rep from Sony Pictures/Disney/Studio Ghibli who apologized after it was clear the screening wasn’t gonig to proceed was really sorry, mortified actually, and everybody took it in stride. Who complains about a free screening? These things happen. Not often, but they do.
AMC Theatres gave us each a free pass, and Capone has promised a new screening for next week. Hopefully, it won’t be on Thursday, as that’s when Nite and I are going to see some hot rock musical action (read: Spring Awakening).
