Jon & Kate Plus 8, “Korean Dinner”: This episode was genius. Race, wasabi peas, and bulgogi? Bring it on.
We learn that Jon can, in fact, cook. And he makes Korean food, for which he shops at an Asian grocery with Alexis and… Collin? I don’t remember which boy, only that it definitely wasn’t Aaden, who cried that even though he knew that it wasn’t his turn.
Everybody loves the dinner. Also, they love wasabi peas. What four year olds eat wasabi peas? Awesome. Jon’s mama was raised in Hawaii, so he also made Hawaiian fried rice. I’d include a link to the episode page on TLC’s web site, but their J&K+8 content (with the exception of video, which you can check out here) appears to be absent. Many interesting moments, like the grocery store, watching the kids lay out their wasabi peas in elaborate patterns before eating, and the revelation that the kids have frequent conversations about who in the family is Asian and who is not.
I know. Totally fascinating. Levels of Asian-ness tend to vary, as the kids call it, and this episode has Mady winning for her chopstick-in-hairdo. I’m not a fan of this ‘do for a multitude of reasons but she seemed to dig it, as did everybody else. And in case you were wondering, it was determined that Kate and Alexis are not Asian. I hope this conversation comes up again.
