Isabella B-G: 1998 – 2006

originally uploaded by jasmined.

Isabella Bauman-Goldberg, a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, passed away Monday after a brief though spirited fight against cancer. She was eight years old.

Isabella entered Jacinda’s life, and mine, in November 1998. A stray found wandering the Midway on the south side of Chicago, Isabella was enticed to join our family with kind words and cans of tuna fish gobbled under Jacinda’s desk at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.

A life-long Chicagoan, Isabella’s known addreses included the Hyde Park and Lakeview neighborhoods of Chicago, as well as Forest Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

Milestones in Isabella’s life included graduating at the top of the basic obedience class taught by revered instructor Hope Young in the spring of 1999, accomplishments in contortionism (as evidenced by the numerous thunderstorms witnessed by her from the safe confines of the underside of Jacinda’s low-slung couch), and highly visible (though unlucrative) engagements as an amateur impersonator of Santa’s Little Helper, the famous cartoon dog from television’s The Simpsons.

Isabella was an active participant in the coalition-building through humans and canines through social dance (she was a particularly adept ballroom dancer), and was a major player in the fight against hunger by eating everything that wasn’t nailed down or eaten by Joe, Jacinda, me, or Ana first.

Isabella liked the dog beach at Melrose Harbor and ice cream. She adored rides in the car. Isabella didn’t like a lot of people — a sad fact to which Andrew must attest — but the ones she liked she, in fact, loved very much.

Isabella is survived by her parents, Jacinda and Joseph, and a sister, Ana, an American Standard poodle.

A memorial (read: we eat lunch and possibly get drunk while looking at old pictures of Isabella) is scheduled tentatively for this weekend. Details to follow.

Aw. I just noticed that Isabella was trained by Hope Young. She was the dog sitter for my first two Border Collies when I was living in Hyde Park and was the puppy obedience instructor for the younger one, Bishop. Both were such great dogs, loved Frisbee and perfectly obedient! Hope had a half Border Collie-half St. Bernard that looked like a gargantuan mutant clone of one of my dogs and it was funny to see them together. They were like the canine version of Russian nesting dolls.
