What kind of a shopper would I be if I didn’t occasionally use my shopping powers for good? While you can and should always donate money or time to the fight against breast cancer (the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has a list of ways to help on their web site — click here for more information), it is in October that breast cancer awareness is brought to the fore by scores of folks who will donate proceeds from specially designed merchandise to the cause. All you have to do is buy some stuff. A few of my favorites are as follows:
- Polo Ralph Lauren’s Pink Pony: starting first with a simple t-shirt, the line has grown to include sweaters, bikinis, hats, and duffel bags.
- Yoplait Save Lids to Save Lives: Buy a Yoplait yogurt with pink lid. Eat yogurt. Save pink lid. Clean pink lid. Mail pink lid back to Yoplait, which then donates 10¢ for each pink lid they collect.
- United States Postal Service Semi-Postal: the fundraising stamp from the United States Postal Service, which raises funds while it raises visibility. Stamps are little, but they can go a long way.
- KitchenAid Artisan™ Series Stand Mixer: KitchenAid will donate $50 from the purchase of each to the Komen Foundation. You will finally perfect that upside down cake you’ve been working on for years.
Please note that these items can be purchased year-round (except for the yogurt, I think).
